There are some months now that our lifestyles have changed completely. We’ve found ourselves confused, we’ve had moments when we thought things will never go back to the way they used to be and moments when we’ve managed to hope for the best. Those moments are still alternating, at least for me, but in the meantime, life goes on…in a weird way some would say, but it does go on. I, for one, am still working from home and will do until September (maybe), so I am doing my best to organize a small home office where I can feel stimulated and able to do what I need to. That is why I have decided to share these ideas with you, so you can tell me what are your thoughts of it, even though I have been absent in here for a while now because of my “real-life duties”. I hope that this time I will be able to balance these two, so that I can share here the many ideas and projects I have in mind. Let’s start with small steps, so here it is the first idea for your/my home office:
Choose a space!
Let’s take a look around the house…where do you imagine the ideal home office? If you have a bigger house, you might be able to reserve an entire room for your work. Choose wisely, especially if you plan on receiving clients home (once this global emergency is over, of course). You might want a room with a separate entrance or anyhow close to the entrance and as separate from the “intimate” rooms of the house as possible: both for yours and your clients’ comfort. However, if you don’t have an entire room available for this purpose, you will need to adapt a corner of either your livingroom or your bedroom (I strongly advise the first, since working and sleeping in the same room can be harmful for your health). Don’t you worry now, we will make it look and feel amazing!
Start with a console…
Once you have decided on the corner, how about choosing the main item of furniture that will become part of the home-office? My advice would be to go for an extending console that does not occupy much space and can also be transformed in a large dining table for your guests. Unless you are the kind of person that has many guests at dinner every evening, I’m sure you will like this versatile solution. You can find many types, dimensions and materials both online and in physical stores.
Be careful with the lights
Now that you have found the perfect spot and the perfect table, take care when choosing lights. If possible, natural light would be ideal, but consider also the direction from which it enters, especially if you need to use a computer most of the time. If your pc/laptop has a matte monitor, part of the problem is solved, but you still need to take into consideration this aspect. Anyhow, if you don’t have a way to bring natural light inside, you should pay attention to a desk lamp that will facilitate work. No matter what you think right now, light is one of the most important aspects to make you be productive and efficient in your work.
Organize, organize and organize!
Here comes the part I like most…organization! You might be surprised to find that, but the truth is that once you’ve found the right way to do it, you will also enjoy this part. This is why you need organizers of all kinds, that nowadays you can find in any big house supplies store. You will need dossiers for your papers, boxes for the little objects on your desk (putting them together in the same place will help you find them easier), and don’t forget about a pencil holder and a nice, happy corner of photos to make you smile every time you look up. Surround yourself with plants
Now THIS is something you don’t need to underestimate! Even if you don’t actually have a green thumb, don’t you worry, nowadays there are so many small plants on the market that don’t need much taking care of. However, they can be important for your productivity (scientific studies have proven that) and they can also improve your daily state of mind. Take a seat, please…
You are just a few steps away from starting, but you still haven’t added an important piece of furniture: the chair. And trust me, you don’t need to underestimate this choice. If you could save some money for the other parts, this is the one that if not done well, might bring about big health problems! You need to choose an ergonomic chair that is comfortable and takes care of your position during work. Most of us spend hours in front of a computer without even realizing it (which is totally wrong, pauses are really really important). To compensate that, we need to take a chair that helps us have a correct position in order to avoid future problems…
Keep calm and start working!
It seems to me that you are all set and ready to begin working. I will leave you to that, but first remember, take a deep breath and wait for my next article, I promise I will not let another year pass before I write again 🥺.
